Since 2006, Bordeaux has held a world record for the largest artificial water mirror in the world! Located opposite the majestic Place de la Bourse, this emblematic space has become one of the city’s most photogenic and popular landmarks (who hasn’t taken a photo of this unique place?). Here, we reveal the secrets of this fascinating work of art!
An imposing water mirror in the heart of Bordeaux
Bordeaux’s water mirror is a true masterpiece of engineering and urban art! This 3,450 m² reflecting pool occupies a central position between Quai de la Douane and Quai Louis XVIII; central in both senses of the word: you can’t go to Bordeaux without stopping by. This emblematic venue was inaugurated in July 2006, making it less than 20 years old (and already the largest in the world)! With its impressive surface area, it stands out as a symbol of the city’s modern urbanism, while preserving a strong link with its historic past!
Designed by fountain-maker Jean-Max Llorca (not Jean de la Fontaine), the Bordeaux water mirror is much more than a simple basin. It combines reflection and fog effects to offer a unique visual and sensory experience. The water, just 2 centimetres deep, creates a mesmerizing mirror effect that reflects the majestic Place de la Bourse and surrounding historic buildings. After a while, a fog rises, creating a magical, ever-changing atmosphere that captivates Bordeaux residents and tourists alike.
A Unique Place: Between Nature and Urbanism
Although uniquely beautiful, the water mirror is not limited to its aesthetic role. In fact, it blends seamlessly into the urban fabric of Bordeaux, providing a place for locals and visitors alike to relax and meet. Bordered by cycle paths and pedestrian promenades, the site is a perfect place to stroll, cool off in summer or enjoy a moment of contemplation with family and friends. The quays of Bordeaux offer an idyllic setting where nature, water and architecture come together.
The Bordeaux water mirror is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks. Its ability to offer spectacular views, day and night, attracts photography enthusiasts from all over the world, and even brands (easyjet used it to reflect an advertising message). The reflection of historic buildings and clouds in the water creates a breathtaking visual scene, while the rising fog offers a completely different spectacle, just as magical and intriguing.
Contemporary World Heritage
In addition to its aesthetic and recreational role, Bordeaux’s water mirror has been listed as a contemporary world heritage site. It represents the innovation and creativity that characterize the city, while being a place of sharing and wonder for all who stop by. The beauty of the water mirror never ceases to fascinate and inspire, as much for its design as for its unique operation.
Bordeaux can be proud of this exceptional site: the largest in the world, let’s not forget!
Visitors can enjoy the water mirror every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with sequences alternating between the mirror effect, fog and emptying. Note that the water mirror is closed every winter for maintenance, but remains a popular attraction during the warmer months!
