A trip through history
Founded in Gallo-Roman times, Bourg soon became a strategic axis of communication and trade. A source of covetousness, the village experienced many ups and downs before being reborn in the Middle Ages. In 1261, it was granted the status of a free commune, a symbol of its importance on the estuary. Marked by the many conflicts of the Renaissance, Bourg suffered the violence of the Fronde and royal reprisals. Its citadel in particular, which had become a strategic and coveted site, was destroyed and then rebuilt several times.
Now classified as an old village, it still boasts old houses, remains of fortifications and medieval gates. To top it all off, the Château de la Citadelle houses the museum of the same name and a charming French garden. And if you like old but lively places, you’ll be delighted: the streets of Bourg are also an opportunity to discover local artisans, businesses and artists.
