A vineyard with a turbulent history
1252 marks the year of the first grape harvest at Château Pape Clément. Then known as Domaine de la Mothe, the estate passed to Bertrand de Goth, Archbishop of Bordeaux, in 1305. After becoming Pope that same year under the name Clement V, he gave his name to the vineyard.
The estate then went through several centuries of history, remaining notably in the hands of the Church until the French Revolution. In the 19th century, the devastation caused by phylloxera and other diseases hit the vineyard hard. A violent hailstorm further exacerbated the situation. The estate was then on the verge of disappearing.
It wasn’t until 1939 that a new chapter began. Winemaker Paul Montagne purchased the property and set about restoring the vineyard. His efforts enabled Château Pape Clément to gradually regain its prestige. Today, the estate is owned by Bernard Magrez, a businessman and wine enthusiast.
A grand cru in an exceptional setting
Part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Pape Clément is one of the 16 Grands Crus Classés of Graves. Its vineyards produce red and white wines, the result of winemaking expertise passed down through generations.
