In the Middle Ages, Penne-d’Agenais flourished around its castle and spread its influence throughout the region. It quickly became a strategic location and was surrounded by ramparts and fortified gates. History still whispers the name of Richard the Lionheart, who reinforced its defenses. Unfortunately, this was not enough to spare the village from successive wars and sieges, which eventually brought down the fortress.
Despite these trials, Penne-d’Agenais has managed to preserve its identity. Today, the vestiges of this turbulent past blend harmoniously with the peaceful charm of the restored village.
A hilltop village with timeless charm

Today, Penne-d’Agenais attracts travelers in search of authentic scenery. From its height of 200 meters above sea level, the village offers a spectacular view. A 360° panorama that encompasses nearly 60 kilometers of green hills and valleys.
The magic begins at the foot of the hill. Once you pass through the first gate of the town, the cobbled streets climb gently towards the summit. It’s a pleasure to lose yourself among the stone houses, some of which are embellished with half-timbering or ochre-colored bricks. Its bucolic, flower-filled squares add to its southern charm.
At the top stands the iconic Notre-Dame-de-Peyragude sanctuary. Its imposing silver dome immediately catches the eye. Visible from afar, it dominates the roofs of the village and guides visitors and pilgrims on their way to Compostela. The building’s unique silhouette is marked by the Neo-Romanesque style inspired by Byzantine art. Around the church, the belvederes offer a remarkable view of the Lot and Boudouyssou valleys. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful break in a shaded square before continuing their stroll through the narrow streets.
