Like its rugby team, European champions this year, the city of Bordeaux is no stranger to thrills and spills. .. The proof? A host of activities that, like the region’s great vintages, have no shortage of intensity, robustness and power. If you follow all the rules and safety instructions, this is a list to be enjoyed without moderation. We promise.
MMA: the new wave sweeping Bordeaux
And it’s not coming from the beaches of Lacanau. The MMA phenomenon is unique in the history of sport: in barely ten years, Mixed Martial Arts has gone from small suburban venues to the biggest stadiums and arenas in France. In Bordeaux, the craze is such that some competitions are held at the Arkéa Arena, which can accommodate up to 11,000 spectators. The next not-to-be-missed event will take place on May 29, and is sure to put on a great show. Want to get started? Professional, supervised clubs will open the ring for you.
Surfing: tame the Atlantic waves

Bordeaux is the perfect metropolis to get to the coast in less than an hour and surf. Head for Lacanau-Océan (1 h drive), a mythical spot with numerous surf schools (Big Mamma, Ocean Ride and Magic Surf School). Board under the arm, wetsuit on the back… and you’re in the water for good!
Climbing: take to the heights in town
You don’t need the Alps or the Pyrenees to climb. Bordeaux and the surrounding area are full of climbing gyms. You can boulder (without harness or rope) or route climb, the choice is yours. There are several gyms in town, including Arkose, Climb up and Block’Out.
Paragliding: fly over the Dune du Pilat
The Dune du Pilat is one of France’s most beautiful paragliding spots. With views over the ocean and the Bassin d’Arcachon, take-off promises an IN-OU-BLI-ABLE experience.
Driving: let the engines roar at the Circuit de Haute-Saintonge
70 km from Bordeaux, the Circuit de Haute-Saintonge lets you get behind the wheel of exceptional cars. GT, single-seater, personalized training courses… get the rubber flowing!
Half-marathon: push your limits at the next one in Bordeaux
What if the thrill also came from the endurance of a race like a half-marathon? The next one in Bordeaux awaits you with bated breath. It’s a gutsy challenge.
Festival watts: break the sound barrier
Yes, it’s possible to get slapped in the face with music too. And even if it’s much softer than that of Damien Penaud or an MMA champion, it’s just as effective. Music is pure sensation, and what better way to experience it than at a good festival? This summer, we’re in luck, because whether you’re into electro or rap (or both), the cream of the crop will be in Bordeaux. Initial Festival on August 29 and 30 and Hypnotize on September 4 and 5.
Motocross: a full-throttle show all year round
Even as a spectator, motocross gets the adrenalin pumping. Watch a motocross race and you’ll quickly understand what it’s all about. As with rugby, you’ll find yourself making a whole host of onomatopoeic uufffff, ouilllle, wouuuuu, guaranteed! In the region, competitions are held in Villenave-d’Ornon, Langon and Sadirac. Find out more about the Ligue Moto Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Skateboarding: coolness and agility
Whether you’re nostalgic for Tony Hawk or a novice, skateboarding remains synonymous with risk-taking and fun. Skipping your first curb or hurtling down a ramp without falling – these are sensations you’ll never forget! The Chartrons Skatepark, to be renovated in 2022, is one of the finest in France. And don’t forget that your helmet is still your best ally.
Bonus: the culinary challenge!
Who said thrills could only be found in a Mission Impossibleparachute jump ? But you can also enjoy a shot of adrenalin sitting at a table with a napkin on your lap. Head for a good Indian or Mexican restaurant to make your taste buds sweat a little. In Bordeaux, try Tigermilk or Indian Curry House…
