“Speaky-what? Speakeasy bars are a type of American bar often considered underground, as they were particularly common during Prohibition (the American period when the sale of alcohol was banned in the USA). Long after the ban (and at a time when some people are counting their benders by the hundreds – no, we’re not judging you), many bars in the same style and inspired by 1920s-30s decor have opened in Bordeaux.

This is one of the city’s best-known speakeasy bars! And to gain access, you’ll need to be a tad curious and adventurous! To enter this cocktail paradise, you’ll have to pass by an old clock. Behind it is a doorway that leads you into a sort of back room, where one of Bordeaux’s coolest bars is hidden. Once inside, you’ll discover a timeless world of spirits, aperitifs and other secret concoctions. In a subdued ambience featuring wood, stone and steel, you can enjoy creative and tasty cocktails. The atmosphere is intimate, bewitching and intoxicating.

• Le Point Rouge

Located on the Quai de Paludate, this bar is hidden away in one of the wings of the famous Château Descas. Very discreet, Le Point Rouge ‘s interior features exposed beams and stonework, vaulted ceilings and leather sofas, in a warm ambience blending the traditional and the industrial. On the menu? Over 100 cocktail references from the 1800s to the present day. It’s impossible not to find a cocktail to suit your palate! Passionate about mixology, the bartenders will serve you delicious beverages at tempting prices.

Le Froufrou

Le FrouFrou Cocktail Club is Bordeaux’s secret address! In this intimate bar, every evening becomes a unique experience! If you’re looking for a timeless evening out, you’ll love the warmly-colored, speakeasy-style lounge atmosphere. The talented mixologist offers creative cocktails (that’s what we go for), but you can also choose a glass of wine or a pint of beer, accompanied by delicious tapas! Le Froufrou is open Tuesday to Saturday, 7pm to midnight. With seating for 40, this cosy bar is ideal for business or private events (birthdays, EVJF/EVG or corporate parties).
