When the leaves take on golden hues and the days invite you to enjoy the great outdoors, certain villages reveal a charm all their own. This is true of Pondaurat, an hour from Bordeaux, whose name means “golden bridge” in Gascon. With its river, ancient stones, and medieval heritage, this small town offers the perfect fall getaway. A lovely break to get some fresh air and step back in time, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
A Commandery and Pilgrims
Situated on the left bank of the Garonne, Pondaurat’s history is closely tied to the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. As early as the 13th century, the village welcomed hospitaller monks from the Order of Saint Anthony. Their mission? To care for patients suffering from “mal des ardents,” a serious illness caused by ergot.
The commandery they founded quickly contributed to the town’s prosperity. Located on a pilgrimage route, Pondaurat became an important stopover. Its mills, farmland, and shops provided food for travelers and residents alike. The village also built fortifications to protect this thriving activity. Pondaurat still bears traces of this past.
In the fall, its peaceful atmosphere invites you to slow down and appreciate the details of its architecture. Amid the ancient stones, the banks of the Bassanne, and the changing colors of the landscape, the stroll feels like a journey back in time.
Pondaurat, a small medieval village
Pondaurat can be explored through walks along the water’s edge and narrow streets steeped in history. As soon as visitors arrive, they can’t miss the bridge-dam spanning the Bassanne. Its golden-hued stones gave the village its name and make it one of the town’s symbols. On both sides of the river, several mills complete this enchanting scene. Crossing the bridge, you’ll discover the old houses, some of which stand out for their buttresses.
In the center of the village, the Church of Saint-Antoine captivates visitors with its architecture. Its vaults and painted decorations bear witness to the different periods of its history. Nearby, the Hospitaller commandery serves as a reminder of the monks’ major role in the village’s development.
