Looking for a beautiful getaway that’s a change of scenery without too much driving? We’ve found just the place for you! Just an hour from Bordeaux, Lake Guizengeard invites you to immerse yourself in the heart of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Nestled between pine forests and golden cliffs, this lake with its unreal blue waters is a former clay quarry reclaimed by nature! Incredible, isn’t it?
A magical landscape born of industry
While the site was once entirely covered by pine forest, kaolin mining significantly altered the landscape at the end of the 20th century. Pits several meters deep were dug to extract this white clay, which was then used in the manufacture of porcelain and cosmetics. The Guizengeard quarry was subsequently abandoned in 2013.
Since then, vegetation has reclaimed its rights and rainwater has filled the deep pits. Nature’s reconquest has given rise to an artificial lake with a dazzling turquoise hue. This unique color is actually due to the absence of aquatic life. The soil is too acidic for algae, fish, and plants to grow there. The crystal-clear water perfectly reflects the sky, captivating visitors.
A walk with breathtaking views
Visitors can explore the site via an easy, accessible 4-kilometer loop. Follow the signs for the “Sentier de découverte de l’argile” (Clay Discovery Trail) from the church parking lot. Along the way, educational panels recount the site’s industrial history and its spectacular ecological rebirth. But the real spectacle is all around you. A furtive genet disappearing into the undergrowth, the dazzling flight of a bee-eater, the fluttering of a dragonfly above the water, or a deer startled at the edge of a copse. Between turquoise reflections, ochre reliefs, and silence punctuated by rustling sounds, each turn reveals an almost unreal setting that makes you want to continue walking.
Lake Guizengeard is much more than just a blue lake: it is a remarkable example of ecological conversion. Between raw beauty and awareness of biodiversity, this hike is an enchanted interlude, ideal for Bordeaux residents in search of nature and discovery! A word of advice? Keep your eyes peeled and your feet on the marked trails!
A protected site to preserve this natural wonder
A victim of its own success, the Guizengeard Lakes site is now subject to strict protection measures. That’s why swimming, camping, drones, fires, and even access to the banks are prohibited. Visitors are also asked to pick up their trash and respect the peaceful surroundings in order to preserve this fragile ecosystem. Fortunately, you can still enjoy these incredible views, and our canine friends are allowed if they are kept on a leash.
