Anecdotes and curiosities about the Église Notre-Dame
1. A necessary reconstruction
The Church of Notre-Dame was awarded historic monument status on May 18, 1908, and the organ case also received this distinction in 1971. Unfortunately, for a decade, from 1971 to 1981, the church had to close its doors due to the collapse of part of its vaults. However, in 1982, it was fully restored under the supervision of the Monuments Historiques department, revealing its original white stonework typical of Bordeaux architecture.
2. Its architecture
As soon as our eyes rest on its façade, we can admire its intricate, detail-filled architecture, characteristic of the Baroque style. Its curved lines and abundance of decoration bear witness to the rococo inspiration, another dominant style in Europe at the time, and contrast with the church’s much purer interior. Like many others, the main architect was inspired by the Church of the Gesù in Rome.
3. Incredible acoustics
In addition to the acoustics characteristic of churches, the architecture of this building gives it unique and exceptional acoustics, allowing the notes of music to resonate. For this quality, it quickly became a favorite venue for concerts in Bordeaux.
