Looking for a unique outing for the whole family? The Bordeaux Museum invites you to (re)discover the cat through its brand-new exhibition: Meow! From pet to undisputed internet star, the cat holds a special place in our daily lives. Yet, behind its apparent familiarity, it retains an air of mystery that continues to intrigue us. From June 17 to January 3, explore this unique exhibition, which invites visitors of all ages to take a fresh look at this feline—as close to us as it is elusive.
A journey into the world of cats
Spanning 130 m², the exhibition explores the many facets of the cat through a journey accessible to all. Visitors are invited to discover the animal from different perspectives, spanning science, culture, and everyday life.
First, we explore the cat as a species. Behavior, sensory abilities, evolution, and its relationship with humans: several themes help us better understand this companion we often think we know inside and out. The exhibition then explores the cat’s place in collective imagination. Sometimes admired, sometimes feared, it has endured through the centuries, fueling beliefs, stories, and artistic creations. From ancient myths to contemporary popular culture, the feline has never ceased to inspire.
Finally, “Miaou!” explores the special bond between cats and humans—a relationship built on attachment, shared habits, and sometimes a healthy dose of independence.
An exhibition created in collaboration with the public
Beyond its subject matter, “Miaou!” also stands out for its design approach. It is, in fact, a participatory exhibition. Over several months, about fifteen people—including volunteer visitors and museum staff—took part in developing the project. Together, they helped define the themes, select the content, and devise the interactive experiences offered to the public.
Since most of them are not museum experts, they contributed what makes this exhibition so rich: their memories, personal experiences, and their own perspectives on cats. This collaborative approach has given rise to an exhibition enriched by a wide variety of viewpoints.
Combining scientific knowledge, personal stories, and collective imagination, “Miaou!” offers a sensitive and lively exploration of an animal that continues to fascinate people of all ages.
