Summer is here! If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, but still want to stay in our beautiful region, head for the Réserve Ornithologique du Teich! If you haven’t already heard of it, it’s quite simply one of Europe’ s finest bird sanctuaries! And the good news? It’s only 1 hour from Bordeaux. As you know, our surroundings are full of beautiful places like the Dune du Pilat and Lac Guizengeard! This time, we invite you to visit this exceptional site, which will delight the curious, photographers, families and biodiversity lovers alike.
Life-size immersion in the heart of the Basin
Located on the shores of the Arcachon Basin, the reserve covers 110 hectares of marshes, lagoons, meadows and reedbeds! This diversity of natural habitats attracts an impressive number of birds: more than 320 species have been recorded, including 91 that nest on site (which the lucky ones will be able to catch a glimpse of)! Some live here all year round, others just pass through according to the seasons and the rhythm of the tides, so it’s highly recommended to consult the tide calendar to optimize your visit. At high tide, the birds gather on the reserve’s resting places, offering an unforgettable spectacle!
A route designed for observation
The site can be explored on foot, via a 6 km loop(exactly the 10,000 daily steps you need). The route is dotted with 20 observation huts and four elevated lookouts, enabling you to approach the wildlife discreetly and comfortably, whatever the weather conditions! The little extra? In January 2025, the reserve was enriched with a new glass-enclosed pool, offering unprecedented proximity to passerines and small mammals while respecting their space. Guided tours are offered all year round by naturalists from the Maison de la Nature, located at the entrance to the site. Curious visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about bird behavior, migration and conservation issues!
A popular destination for photographers
The Réserve du Teich has become a must-see spot for both professional and amateur wildlife photographers. And it has to be said, the results are dazzling! Thanks to the tranquility of the place and the variety of landscapes, each season offers its share of original shots! Maybe it’s time to awaken your inner photographer!
