The warm, intimate theater in the center of Bordeaux
Built over a hundred years ago in 1913, the Théâtre Trianon invites you to raise the curtain. Known as the ” little theater of great successes “, this is a truly exceptional venue in the heart of Bordeaux’s golden triangle. With its stage frame adorned with Art Nouveau bas-reliefs and its red velvet and wooden armchairs, it is the refined setting for vaudevilles and boulevard plays. Its magnificent listed façade, the warm ambience of its lobby and the hushed decor of its auditorium make the Théâtre Trianon a cultural landmark in Bordeaux.
And if that weren’t enough, it’s located in Bordeaux’s golden triangle, just a stone’s throw from Place Gambetta and, above all, the Grand Théâtre, Bordeaux’s institution par excellence. Together with the latter, they are the city’s oldest theaters. You’ll have no trouble keeping busy in this area, where shops and restaurants are plentiful.
Anecdotes and curiosities about the Théâtre Trianon
1. A prestigious venue
In the 1920s, the Trianon was a popular meeting place for Bordeaux’s elite, becoming a landmark of French theater until the 1950s. It housed a troupe of professional actors, all of whom lived in Bordeaux. During this period, it was the epicenter of activity for Kleber Harpin, a renowned actor and conservatory teacher, and hosted such renowned Parisian actors as Cécile Sorel and Madeleine Renaud. In addition to its theatrical prestige, the Trianon was also a jazz mecca in Bordeaux, where legends such as Django Reinhardt and Claude Luter performed in 1944 and 1947.
2. Temporary retraining
By 1955, it was struggling to pay its taxes and was forced to transform itself into a cinema affiliated to the Pathé firm , with priority given to showing Pathé films and newsreels. In 1980, at the height of the mainstream cinema crisis, the theater made a radical decision to devote itself exclusively to showing pornographic films. This will only last a year, as the Centre Jean-Vigo takes over with a program of art house films.
