Located in the Entre-deux-Mers region, about sixty kilometers from Bordeaux, Castelmoron-d’Albret is an ideal destination for a day trip. Its fifty or so stone houses overlook the Ségur valley, surrounded by greenery and vineyards. The best way to explore the village? Leave your car behind entirely. Here, the cobblestone streets are so narrow that only pedestrians can get through.
With an area of 3.54 hectaresand a perimeter of 970 meters, Castelmoron-d’Albret is even smaller than Place Charles-de-Gaulle in Paris. The smallest house in the village is only two meters wide. Despite its record-breaking size, the village has retained its status as an independent municipality. At a time when many small municipalities are merging, Castelmoron stands out as an exception.
Grain Market and Ironwork
The village doesn’t owe its reputation solely to its record. Built on a rocky outcrop, it retains the layout of an ancient fortified market town, and several buildings bear witness to its rich past. As you stroll through it, you can admire the old stone houses, the 19th-century grain market, and the elegant doors adorned with wrought-ironwork. The church, whose origins date back to the Romanesque period, completes this scene that seems frozen in time. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1973, Castelmoron-d’Albret offers an immersion in several centuries of history, without ever losing its authenticity.
From the village’s heights, the view opens up to the Gironde countryside and the vineyards of the Entre-deux-Mers. Hiking enthusiasts can extend their walk along the surrounding trails or on the Terra Aventura trail.
