To our great delight, the region is full of quiet little spots where you can enjoy a refreshing break in the shade. From large, wild lakes to waterfront recreational parks, here are the best parks and ponds to cool off near Bordeaux.
The Terres Blanches Lake in Espiet
Sometimes you don’t have to go very far to feel like you’re in a different world. The Terres Blanches recreation park, located less than 30 minutes from Bordeaux, captivates visitors with the turquoise-blue color of its lake. Whether you’re relaxing in the shade, going water skiing, or grabbing a bite to eat at the restaurant, this is one of the best places to recharge and escape the heat.
The blue lake of Léognan is tucked away in the heart of a wooded park. Water as far as the eye can see, an endless row of pine trees, swans, ducks, and fish… It boasts an idyllic 18-hectare setting nestled among châteaux and vineyards. It’s the perfect spot for a hike and a picnic!
Just 1 hour and 30 minutes from Bordeaux, the Cazaux and Sanguinet Lakes promise a true escape into nature. One of the largest freshwater lakes, it welcomes visitors and families across its 5,800 hectares. With its pine trees, fine sandy beaches, and hidden coves, this accessible corner of paradise offers a taste of a simple and relaxing getaway—whether for an afternoon of swimming or longer.
Bègles Beach
A 7-hectare lake, 1,000 m² of beach with fine sand, and 2,000 m² of grassy beach: welcome to Bègles Plage! The site, fully open during the summer months, offers a welcome respite and a refreshing break with its urban beach surrounded by greenery. Sports facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a food court are also available for the whole family.
The Lacanau Pond
Covering 1,985 hectares, the Lacanau Pond (or Lacanau Lake) is one of the largest lakes in the Landes region. It’s also one of the wildest, especially in its southern part. A trail winds its way through the lake’s waters—where reeds and water lilies alternate—between tall, wooded dunes and small islands that are home to incredible flora and fauna. In short, it’s the perfect spot for wildlife watching and hiking.
The Green Lake of Canéjan
You don’t have to stray too far from the city center to enjoy a breath of fresh air! Lake Canéjan is proof of that. Indeed, incredible but true—there’s a little corner of paradise bordered by an emerald-green lake just about twenty minutes from Bordeaux. This peaceful haven is perfect for hikers, who can follow the stream and venture into the woods to walk around the lake and enjoy an idyllic picnic break.
The Hostens Lakes

Lake Dagueys
An artificial lake north of Libourne, Lac des Dagueys is the perfect destination for a family day out. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the surrounding forest by following the 11-kilometer loop trail.
