New Year’s Eve is over, and it’s time for the first day of 2026 (Happy New Year!)! Whether you need to do a little shopping for your New Year’ s lunch, or just want to browse around, the question is: which stores are staying open this Thursday, January 1, in Bordeaux? On this bank holiday, La Belle Endormie lives up to its name, and the majority of supermarkets remain closed. But there are exceptions. Here’s our practical guide to avoid finding your door closed.
Shopping centers and superstores
If you’re looking for a big shopping spree or a full week’s shopping, you’ll have to wait until the following day. Almost all shopping centers in and around Bordeaux are closed.
- Total closures: don’t count on the stores on rue Sainte-Catherine, or the Mériadeck, Bordeaux Lac, Rives d’Arcins (Bègles) or Mérignac Soleil shopping centers. Most of them are announcing total closures on January 1.
- Hypermarkets: major players such as Leclerc, Auchan and Carrefour will not be opening any of their hypermarkets on New Year’s Day. Grand Frais stores will also be closed.
- Leisure exception: UGC Ciné Cité (Bordeaux Gambetta, Bassins à Flot and Talence) and Mégarama in Bastide are usually open.
Supérettes and food shops: emergency solutions
As is often the case in Bordeaux, salvation will come from small local shops, particularly in the city center (Hôtel de Ville, Victoire, Chartrons).
- The Carrefour network : while Carrefour Market stores are closing, some Carrefour City stores (such as Saint Projet, Juin, Bonnac, Allamandiers, Clare, Marne, Godard…) and Carrefour Express stores (Saint Georges, V Hugo, Portal, Somme…) are frequently open in the morning, sometimes until 1 or 8 p.m. depending on the outlet.
- Local brands : Spar and Vival stores are often open all day. Conversely, Monoprix stores (notably Saint-Christoly) and Picard stores draw the curtain all day on January 1st.
- Intermarché : “Express” stores may sometimes be open, but this is at the discretion of each store manager. A check on their website is highly recommended.
- Hard-discount : all Lidl and Aldi stores in the Bordeaux area are closed on January 1st.
